Boro Making with Leanne from Kimono House

The Japanese word BORO literally means ‘ragged or tattered’ and is a traditional example of patchworked fabric.  Historically in Japan, indigo and kimono fabric was truly precious and never discarded - old cloth was repaired and stitched together to make new items for every-day use.  In this class we will learn how to stitch, mend and quilt layers of recycled cloth to give them new life in this traditional Japanese way.

Sashiko Stitching with Leanne from Kimono House

Sashiko (translated to ‘little stabs’) is the term used to describe the beautiful, and historically functional Japanese embroidery, using white cotton thread on indigo fabric.  Generating patterns from both nature and folklore, Sashiko has emerged from a mending or ‘reinforcement of garment’ ability once taught to Japanese girls as a way to determine their suitability for marriage, into a decorative and meditative stitching technique enjoyed by crafting and textile enthusiasts the world over.
